Azilal rugs are the colourful, artistic rugs of the Azilal region in Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains. Each rug in this collection is handwoven by Berber artisans from 100% natural wool, with bold abstract designs on a cream or ivory background. Every piece is made to order, in the size you need.

What makes an Azilal rug different

Where a Beni Ourain rug is quiet and neutral, an Azilal rug is expressive. Weavers use bright reds, oranges, blues, pinks and greens to draw symbols, shapes and free-flowing lines, so each rug reads like a piece of textile art. The pile is lower than a Beni Ourain, which makes Azilal rugs easy to place under furniture and in rooms with doors that need to swing over them. Because each rug is woven by hand, small variations in pattern and size (up to 2–3 inches) are part of its character.

How your rug is made

Once you order, the weaver sets the loom to your size and weaves the design by hand, then the rug is washed and dried in the mountain air before it is checked, photographed and shipped. Custom rugs take about 3–4 weeks to make (4–6 weeks for rugs larger than 8×10 ft), then usually 3–5 business days to reach the USA or Canada, 2–4 to Europe and the UK and 5–10 to the rest of the world by FedEx or DHL Express, with free shipping to every country.

Where an Azilal rug works best

An Azilal rug is the focal point of a room. It brings colour to a white or neutral living room, warmth to a bedroom and personality to a kids’ room or home office. Bohemian, eclectic and modern interiors suit it best. Choose a 5×7 or 6×9 ft rug as an accent, or an 8×10 ft rug to define a seating area. Caring for an Azilal rug

Vacuum regularly on a low setting without a beater bar, and turn the rug every few months so sunlight fades it evenly. Blot spills straight away with a clean, damp cloth and avoid rubbing bright colours; for a deep clean, use a professional rug cleaner.
