Beni Ourain Rugs: The Complete Guide

Best Moroccan Beni Ourain Rug for USA Homes – Handmade Berber Carpet

A Beni Ourain rug is a thick, hand-knotted wool rug made by Berber weavers in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains, usually ivory with simple black or brown lines. This guide covers what makes a real Beni Ourain, how it is made, what it should cost, which size to choose and how to look after it, so you can buy one with confidence.

What is a Beni Ourain rug?

The name comes from the Beni Ourain, a group of Berber (Amazigh) tribes from the Atlas Mountains. For generations, women in these communities knotted thick wool rugs for their own homes: as blankets in winter, as bedding, and as floor coverings that kept out the cold. Mid-century designers in Europe and America later fell for their graphic simplicity, and today a Beni Ourain is one of the most recognised rug styles in modern interiors.

You will also see the name spelled Beni Ouarain, Beni Ouarian or simply Beni rug. They all describe the same style.

How to recognise a Beni Ourain

  • Colour: a natural ivory or cream wool ground. Classic pieces use black or dark brown lines; modern pieces add blue, pink, green or multicolour designs.
  • Pattern: diamonds, zigzags, lattices and open grids, drawn by hand and never perfectly symmetrical.
  • Pile: deep, soft and slightly shaggy, often 2–3 cm or more.
  • Ends: fringes or tassels that are the continuation of the warp threads, not sewn on afterwards.

How a Beni Ourain rug is made

Each rug starts with sheep’s wool that is washed, carded and spun. The weaver sets up a vertical wooden loom to the size of the rug, then ties thousands of individual knots row by row, cutting each to length to form the pile. Lines of flat weave between the knotted rows hold the structure together. When the rug comes off the loom it is washed for several days to soften the wool, then dried in the open mountain air.

At Moroccan Woven, every rug is made to order. A rug up to 8×10 ft usually takes 3–4 weeks to make; larger rugs take 4–6 weeks.

How to tell a real Beni Ourain from a copy

  • Look at the back. A hand-knotted rug shows the pattern on the back, with small irregular knots. A tufted copy has a glued fabric or latex backing.
  • Check the fringe. On a real rug the fringe is part of the rug’s structure. Sewn-on fringe is a sign of machine production.
  • Expect small imperfections. Lines that wander slightly and sizes that vary by 2–3 inches are normal for handmade work.
  • Be wary of very low prices. A genuine 8×10 ft hand-knotted wool rug needs weeks of work and a lot of wool; prices far below a few hundred dollars usually mean a machine-made or tufted copy.

Choosing the right size

  • Living room: the front legs of the sofa and chairs should sit on the rug. For most rooms that means 8×10 ft or 9×12 ft.
  • Bedroom: the rug should extend 45–60 cm (18–24 in) beyond each side of the bed. A 6×9 ft rug suits a queen bed; 8×10 ft or larger suits a king.
  • Dining room: add about 60 cm (24 in) on every side of the table so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. Choose a lower-pile rug if chairs move a lot.
  • Hallway: a Moroccan runner 2–3 ft wide, leaving some floor visible on both sides.

Styling a Beni Ourain rug

The ivory ground and graphic lines work with almost any interior. In a Scandinavian or minimalist room, a classic black-on-ivory rug adds texture without adding colour. In a modern living room, it softens leather, metal and concrete. In a boho or eclectic space, layer it with kilims, rattan and plants, or choose a Beni Ourain with coloured lines. Because the pile is deep, it also makes a cosy spot to sit on the floor with children.

Caring for your rug

  • Vacuum regularly on a low setting, without a rotating beater bar.
  • Turn the rug every few months so it wears and fades evenly.
  • Blot spills straight away with a clean, damp cloth; do not rub.
  • Have it cleaned by a professional rug cleaner every year or two.
  • Expect some shedding in the first weeks; it slows down with regular vacuuming.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Beni Ourain rug worth the price?

A hand-knotted wool rug lasts for decades and can be cleaned and repaired, while a machine-made copy wears out much sooner. Each piece is also unique, made by hand.

Are Beni Ourain rugs good for homes with pets or children?

Yes. Wool is naturally durable and resists dirt, and the thick pile is soft to play on. Regular vacuuming and prompt blotting of spills keep it looking good.

What is the difference between Beni Ourain, Azilal and Mrirt rugs?

Beni Ourain rugs are neutral and shaggy, Azilal rugs are colourful with lower pile, and Beni Mrirt rugs are the densest and softest. Read our comparison of Beni Ourain, Azilal and Mrirt rugs.

How long does delivery take?

After your rug is made, delivery usually takes 2–4 business days to Europe and 3–6 business days to the USA and Canada by FedEx or DHL Express. See our shipping policy.
